On Wednesday 22nd April the British Interplanetary Society will present the second of our weekly lectures – Dr Michael Warner will present artefacts of Apollo13.

Dr Michael Warner, British owner of a declared private collection of Apollo historic artefacts, will present the story of two mission manuals that helped rescue the crew of Apollo 13: (i) Charlie Duke’s mission control Apollo 13 Lunar Module Contingency Checklist, annotated with hand-written procedures direct from the backup crew’s herculean efforts working in the Kennedy Space Center simulator; and (ii) Jim McDivitt’s flown Apollo 9 Lunar Module Systems Evaluation Checklist, which paved the way for the CMS-LM docked decent engine burn contingency procedures that subsequently brought the Apollo 13 crew back home. The two manuals will be on display throughout, and the talk illustrated with audio recordings of Charlie Duke (CapCom) reading up these procedures to Jim Lovell. The chronology and geography of key events depicted in the manuals will be illuminated by a scaled-model installation of the Earth and Moon system.
